Baird, Hampton & Brown is further solidifying its presence in the thriving Dallas-Fort Worth market by opening a new Dallas office. Building on the strong relationships already in place, this strategic move was a natural progression for the firm. The Dallas team will offer BHB’s full suite of services—ranging from civil engineering to project management—while focusing on forging long-lasting partnerships with development, commercial, and municipal clients.

Building on its strong history of project success and client-centered service, BHB’s new Dallas office aims to meet the evolving needs of North Texas’s rapidly expanding residential, commercial, and municipal sectors. By bringing together a dedicated team of experienced professionals, the firm plans to provide comprehensive engineering solutions—from initial planning and design to final project execution—all under one roof. This local presence makes it easier for clients to collaborate and stay informed about project developments and reinforces BHB’s commitment to building long-term community partnerships.

To help drive the Dallas expansion, BHB is excited to welcome Christopher H. Blevins, PE, a senior civil engineer with more than 30 years of experience and a strong focus on solutions and relationship-building.

“Chris’s passion for innovation and problem-solving stands out, and we’re thrilled to have such talent on board,” said BHB President and CEO Trace Strevey.

Joining from HP Civil Engineering, where he served as Director of Engineering, Blevins has contributed to notable land development projects in and around Dallas. His extensive expertise and proven track record make him a pivotal addition to BHB’s efforts to deepen its footprint in Dallas.

“I’m excited to join BHB at such a pivotal time for the Dallas market,” said Blevins. “I look forward to building new relationships and utilizing my experience to deliver some truly unique new developments for our clients and the communities we serve.”

In addition, Peter Caravano, PE, CFM, recently promoted to Associate, will be teaming up with Blevins to lead the Dallas office, drawing on his six years of experience at BHB’s Grapevine location. Caravano is actively involved in the engineering community and is a recent recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Young Engineer of the Year award.

CIVIL

Ally May | Civil Intern

Tarleton State University, Class of 2026 – Civil Engineering

Ally has had a rewarding experience interning at BHB this summer, exploring potential career paths in both civil and structural departments. Passionate about pursuing a career with a focus either on hydrology or structural engineering, Ally has particularly enjoyed mastering storm drain calculations and improving her CAD skills during her time here. “The staff at BHB has been incredibly welcoming, which is something that stood out to me,” Ally said. “Everyone was eager to help and answer any questions I had, which really helped me to learn as much as possible this summer.” Outside of engineering, Ally loves to cook and bake.

Rene Baker | Civil Intern

University of Texas at Arlington, Class of 2026 – Civil Engineering

Rene has enjoyed the collaborative and friendly environment at BHB’s Grapevine office, where the mix of disciplines fosters open communication and strong teamwork, making it a truly supportive place to learn and grow. “Everyone is open with each other and there are no walls between disciplines, so there’s an atmosphere where you are always confident that you can truly rely on one another, and I have cherished that very much,” she said. This summer at BHB, Rene particularly enjoyed contributing to a playground replacement project for the City of Fort Worth, where she gained valuable insights into floodplains and floodways, which she found to be very interesting. After graduation, Rene is considering pursuing a master’s degree in hydrology and hydraulics (H&H) or environmental engineering, but she also dreams of celebrating her achievement with a vacation abroad, with Ireland and New Zealand topping her travel list. A fun fact about Rene is that she built her own PC last year, researching all the parts, purchasing them, and assembling the computer as a personal project—a process that was both enjoyable and educational.

ELECTRICAL

Caia Halpin | Electrical Intern

University of North Texas, Class of 2025 – Electrical Engineering with Minor in Mathematics

During her time at BHB, Caia has found great value in every project she’s worked on, particularly Abilene Heritage Square, her first project, where she learned extensively about load calculations, receptacles, light fixtures, and scheduling. Caia appreciated BHB’s supportive and caring culture. “BHB is a company that truly cares about each individual employee,” she said. “Every name is remembered, and everyone cares about one another and is always willing to reach out a helping hand. I have always felt at home and spoiled while working here.” She has made friends and continues to learn something new each day, making her experience truly rewarding. Outside of her academic pursuits, Caia enjoys crocheting, collecting Legos, reading manga, and playing video games. After graduation, her goal is to start saving money for a house and see where life takes her from there.

Olivia Jackson | Electrical Intern

Texas Christian University, Class of 2025 – Electrical Engineering

During her internship at BHB this summer, Olivia has particularly enjoyed working on a challenging project where she recreated a large industrial space from scratch using Revit, allowing her to explore and master various Revit features. Looking ahead, Olivia aspires to continue with BHB after graduation, as she has found the company to be an exceptional place for professional growth. “BHB has left a phenomenal impression as a company that truly cares about their employees and clients,” she said. Her time at BHB has been marked by a strong sense of support and camaraderie, with colleagues who are welcoming and willing to assist, making her internship experience both enriching and memorable. Outside of her academic pursuits, Olivia is an avid Marvel movie fan, finding joy in the superhero universe.

MECHANICAL

Oscar Gurrola | Mechanical Intern

Texas Christian University, Class of 2025 – Mechanical Engineering

Oscar is a Mechanical Engineering major at Texas Christian University, set to graduate in May 2025. A passionate football fan, Oscar follows both the NFL and NCAA, with the Dallas Cowboys and TCU Horned Frogs being his favorite teams. After graduation, he plans to pursue a full-time mechanical engineering position, with a strong interest in returning to BHB due to the supportive environment and meaningful projects. Oscar’s ultimate goal is to obtain his Professional Engineer (PE) license while broadening his skill set through diverse opportunities. His favorite project at BHB this summer has been the White Horse Christian Academy, where he gained valuable experience with submittal phases and honed his skills in programs like Revit and Trace700. Oscar has been impressed by BHB’s collaborative and supportive work environment, the company’s commitment to professional development through its mentorship program, and its impactful community-focused projects. The remarkable growth of BHB has also stood out to him during his time with the company.

Matthew Huang-Frazier | Mechanical Intern

Texas A&M University, Class of 2025 – Mechanical Engineering

Matthew has found his experience at BHB to be both eye-opening and educational. Initially unaware of the full scope of what consulting engineers do, he was pleasantly surprised by the hands-on nature of the work, particularly during site visits where he could see the practical application of his designs. Matthew’s favorite project so far has been working on the UNT Discovery Lab, where he gained experience in everything from initial designs to collaborating with manufacturers and suppliers. He appreciates the supportive and friendly atmosphere at BHB, noting that his colleagues are patient and always willing to teach. Outside of his engineering pursuits, he enjoys playing volleyball and pickleball.

Thanks also to Jake Johnson, Erik Manis, Braeden Strevey, Ashley Rath, Campbell Barham, and Cynthia Hernandez for joining us this summer!

In 1979, Les Brown, future founder of Baird, Hampton & Brown, sought a way to use his mechanical engineering skills to serve others. During a Christian Missions conference, he was introduced to TECH Team Advantage (TTA), formerly known as Missionary Tech Team, an organization that would allow him to donate his expertise to Christian communities that needed new facilities. The following year, he began volunteering with TTA and has since been a vital part of their Facilities Solutions team for 44 years.

The TECH Team Advantage Mission

For over 50 years, TTA has been dedicated to serving churches, Christian schools, camps, hospitals, and other ministry groups in the United States and abroad who cannot afford to pay full price for professional services. Today, TTA offers a broad spectrum of low-cost services, including:

Facilities Solutions: Architectural and engineering design.

Media Solutions: Custom graphic design, print, web, video, and AV media.

Software Solutions: Unique software and mobile app development.

Vehicle Solutions: Safe, reliable leased vehicles for missionaries.

With projects completed in 50 countries and 42 states, TTA has a vast reach, serving a variety of organizations on diverse projects. The TTA team is comprised of support-based, self-fund-raising missionaries, volunteers, and interns, all of whom raise their own financial support to make their volunteer efforts possible.

Les’ Contributions

On top of his work at BHB in Fort Worth, Les commutes to Longview weekly to work with TTA. His 44-year dedication highlights the profound impact of using technical skills for service, embodying a mission that goes beyond financial gain to make a real difference in communities around the world.

Les plays a pivotal role in this non-profit organization as the Facilities Solutions Team Lead. In this role, he evaluates potential projects, considering both the organization’s financial needs and if their mission aligns with that of TTA, and applies his engineering expertise to ensure these projects are both practical and achievable before executing the mechanical engineering design.

Diverse Projects, Practical Solutions

The scope of projects undertaken by Les and his team is vast and varied. Their work includes everything from small restroom additions for nearby churches to large-scale new hospitals in foreign countries. Les ensures that the projects they undertake are practical and can be completed, avoiding unnecessary delays and costs for the organizations. Since the job is not complete after the design phase, he must consider construction and maintenance costs as well. Usually, the church or organization will have to raise their own funds for construction of any new facilities, and then be able to pay for maintenance and repairs in the future so one of TTA’s primary goals is to ensure that their designs are feasible, considering the financial constraints of the organization as well as local building standards, which can be especially difficult in some overseas projects. This pragmatic approach ensures that the efforts of the organizations they support are not wasted and that they can achieve their construction goals.

Of the hundreds of projects Les has worked on with TTA, one of the more memorable is the first project he worked on, which was a hospital in the jungles of Shell, Ecuador where the operating rooms were equipped only with window-unit air conditioners. While this is obviously different from most American hospitals, it is crucial for him to design systems that fit within local standards and codes, can be operated efficiently by the local people, and be maintained throughout their lifespan with necessary repairs and replacement parts.

Les and TTA also worked on the headquarters of Child Evangelism Fellowship near St. Louis, Missouri where they developed a new Digital Creative Center for filming educational videos, the Word of Life Conference Center near Port Richey, Florida that included several new buildings including an auditorium, a dining facility, and multiple hotels, and several projects for Pine Cove Christian Summer Camp, a staple of the Christian community in East Texas, near where TTA is based.

Impact Beyond Costs

The true impact of Les’s volunteer work lies not only in the cost savings he helps provide but also in the opportunities that he creates for churches and organizations that would otherwise be unable to access technical expertise with scarce resources. His work is a testament to the power of using one’s skills and training for the greater good and exemplifies how engineering expertise can be a tool for service, making a profound difference in communities around the world.

Founding Principal Merlin Hampton, PE, has retired from Baird, Hampton & Brown.

Merlin is an electrical engineer with over 50 years of experience in consulting engineering. He is a founding principal of BHB and has been instrumental in the success and longevity of the firm.

Merlin, along with Bill Baird and Les Brown, founded BHB in 1992 and worked tirelessly to build the firm from humble beginnings of “no money, no clients, and no work,” as Merlin says. As the most meticulous of the three, Merlin managed the bookkeeping on top of his engineering work in those early days, calculating if they had enough money to give themselves paychecks each week, which during the first few years, they often did not.

From the beginning, BHB was built on relationships, a priority that has remained for all 32 years. BHB’s very first paying job in 1992 was an electrical project completed by Merlin—$1,500 for an exterior lighting project at a local ranch, referred to them by a former colleague. From there, Merlin’s relationship with the owners of the Spaghetti Warehouse brought in several more projects, making them BHB’s first recurring client. Today, BHB has many clients that date back to the early 1990s, which is a testament to the quality of designs and long-term commitment to clients, two things that were very important to Merlin.

Merlin has always truly cared about the success and happiness of his clients and employees. His emphasis on fostering relationships laid the framework for BHB’s mission to prioritize people above all else. “By the time BHB got to be 20 or 25 people we were a well-oiled machine, but marketing to feed that machine became much more important,” he said. “We had to work harder to keep clients happy and build relationships because people depended on us for their livelihood. The most amazing thing we have is our people.” He is a perfect example of BHB’s commitment to do the right thing.

Today, BHB is a robust team of 135 professionals across four offices, offering services in electrical, mechanical, civil, and structural engineering, land surveying, and landscape architecture. Our business model has been directly impacted by Merlin’s vision for the firm from 32 years ago. He felt strongly that the longevity of the firm would be based on a diverse client base, and therefore BHB now regularly works on governmental, industrial, commercial, private development, health care, educational, and faith-based projects. It was also Merlin’s vision to keep Principals directly involved with the design and construction of the projects, a commitment we still abide by today.

We thank Merlin for his hard work, leadership, relentless pursuit of excellence in design, mentoring of young engineers, and steadfast dedication to the success of BHB. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to you, Merlin, and best wishes to you and Margaret in your retirement!

With a group of 11 interns in electrical, civil, mechanical, and structural engineering, as well as two administrative interns, BHB has assembled a dynamic and ambitious cohort of college students eager to dip their toes into the world of engineering. Our internship program has long been a valuable asset to our team, providing us with a continuous influx of budding talent. We are thrilled to introduce you to the talented individuals who have joined our team this summer.

ELECTRICAL

Erik Manis | Electrical Intern

Texas Tech University 2023 – Electrical Engineering

As a child growing up in Benbrook, Texas, Erik’s dream was to be an astronaut or the president, but later he decided engineering was a bit more realistic. Erik works remotely for BHB while he finishes his degree, and through this internship, he hopes to meet like-minded people to help him learn things that he simply cannot get from school. “Education is wonderful, but application is more important,” he said. His goal after school is to start investing and begin growing his wealth while he’s still young. The newlywed and his wife hope to buy a house shortly after graduation as their first big investment. In his free time, Erik does woodworking, building things like bookshelves, desks, cigar boxes, and more, a self-taught skill learned through trial and error.

With mixed emotions, Baird, Hampton & Brown announces the recent retirement of Kevin Miller, PE after being a valuable member of our team for 22 years.

Kevin began his career in 1980 as Assistant City Engineer for the City of Goshen, Indiana before moving to Texas a year later. Kevin worked for BHB’s founder Bill Baird at another engineering firm as an Engineer in Training before earning his Professional Engineer license. In 1988, Kevin became the Assistant Public Works Director for the City of North Richland Hills. He had a major hand in rewriting the City’s Public Works Design Manual, much of which is still in effect today. In 2000, Kevin returned to the private sector to work at a company run by BHB’s Vice President Ottis Lee. A few years later, that company was acquired by BHB, and Kevin was working for Bill Baird once again.

Because of the relationships he had built with the City of North Richland Hills, Kevin was able to continue providing consulting services to them throughout his career, as well as several other municipalities including Keller, Haltom City, Cleburne, and Hood County.

Caroline Waggoner, PE, Director of Public Works for the City of North Richland Hills, has worked with Kevin on numerous projects over the years. “Kevin Miller is a standout in the world of consulting engineers,” she said. “His ability to effectively communicate technical concepts with city staff, inspectors, and contractors is rare and much appreciated, as is his willingness to literally get down in the trenches during construction. He never shied away from the teachable engineering moments, and I am truly grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him.”

At BHB, Kevin’s role included client development, contract negotiation, design, construction review, and problem resolution for a variety of different markets. He was an engineer that truly wanted to serve the public—something he learned from Greg Dickens, former Director of Public Works for the City of North Richland Hills, during their time working together. He believes that all jobs and all clients deserve to be treated like their project is special, and anything less would be a disservice to the client.

“The best civil engineers are those that you can’t see their work. If we do our job correctly, with honor, diligence, and careful thought, nobody has to fix it, the engineering or construction,” he said. “Over the course of my career, I’ve provided engineering for projects that needed to be built because somebody else didn’t get it exactly right. I would like to think my solution on those projects helped make some lives a little better.”

In his retirement, Kevin is most looking forward to spending time with his family. His mother and daughter have both survived cancer so they are his first priority. Otherwise, he plans to get more involved with his astronomy hobby; he has a telescope (an eight-inch Meade Reflector on a motorized equatorial mount) and owns land outside of the city where the skies are more visible.

We would like to express our endless gratitude to Kevin for his dedication to BHB and wish him nothing but the best in his retirement.

Baird, Hampton & Brown is saddened yet excited to reflect upon the recent retirement of Konstantine Bakintas, PE after being a key leader in the firm, and part of the family, for 29 years. His tenure and leadership with BHB included spreading our vision to Grapevine by opening and running an office there for 17 years, and it included time as President of the corporation where he pioneered our success for seven years.

Konstantine began his career in 1985, working alongside BHB’s three founders at another engineering firm. In 1993, the year after BHB was founded, he was hired as our ninth employee. He was named Principal in 1996, established our Grapevine office in 2005, and was elected President in 2013.

“I am pleased and proud to have worked with a number of accomplished engineers and surveyors at BHB for almost my entire career,” Konstantine said, “I am also thankful for the opportunity to have been a member of BHB’s leadership team, and to serve as an officer of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers.”

He has been heavily involved in professional organizations, serving as President of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers in the Mid-Cities Chapter and at the state level. He has been recognized as Engineer of the Year by the DFW Mid-Cities Chapter of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, and Distinguished Engineer by the Texas Engineering Foundation.

Over the years, Konstantine has become an invaluable asset to our team. He has extensive experience in engineering design and project management, as well as a passion for improving the landscape of our communities. Some of his most memorable projects include a tactical vehicle wash facility for the US Corps of Engineers at Fort Hood, the Glade Road & Pool Road roundabouts for the City of Colleyville, the Dry Branch Creek Regional Detention Pond for the City of Fort Worth, and the Monterra Medical Campus in Alliance Town Center. He has worked closely with several small municipalities, even serving as City Engineer for the City of Bridgeport and Town Engineer for the Town of Edgecliff Village.

Mayor Mickey Rigney of Edgecliff Village has maintained an outstanding working relationship with Konstantine over many years. “Konstantine worked many projects for the city of Edgecliff Village, and each project was handled professionally and with a personal touch that satisfied our complex needs,” Mayor Rigney said. “His briefings to our city staff and to our city council were always detailed, but understandable to all levels. When Konstantine talked, everyone listened.”

Konstantine’s words of wisdom to BHB employees are to invest the time and effort to set goals, do the work, and plan for success. “Consider this perspective: you work with BHB and not for BHB – ultimately we all work for ourselves,” he said, “I encourage you to view this organization as the vehicle through which you can pursue your personal career goals… whatever they may be – and appreciate that your success is BHB’s success!”

To leadership at our company, he emphasized the importance of remaining actively engaged in professional and business organizations, reviewing industry publications, following local, state, and national business and political news, and continually consulting with our clients. “By identifying and understanding trends, and considering industry forecasts, you can best evaluate and update our corporate strategy – and assure continued success.”

In his retirement, Konstantine plans to spend his time exploring new places, trying new hobbies, and learning about potential topics of interest outside of engineering including astronomy, technology, astrophotography, or even apiary. He and his wife Stephanie plan to travel to Scotland, France, Switzerland, and several U.S. National Parks.

We would like to express our endless gratitude to Konstantine for his dedication to BHB and wish him nothing but the best in all of his future ventures.
