BHB provided mechanical and plumbing engineering services for Maverick Hall, a new five-story, 212,000-square-foot residence hall at the University of Texas at Arlington. Designed to house 654 students, the facility offers a mix of super single, double suite, and private suite accommodations, along with dedicated study spaces and amenities that support academic success and community engagement.

The project was delivered under an accelerated nine-month design schedule to meet an early spring occupancy deadline. Each residential floor includes shared amenities such as small kitchens, laundry facilities, classrooms, and study rooms, while common areas feature flexible gathering spaces and integrated technology to create a supportive living and learning environment.

As part of the HVAC system evaluation, BHB analyzed the feasibility of geothermal heat pumps; however, chilled water was ultimately selected after confirming adequate capacity within the campus chilled water plant. Built-up air handling units were specified to serve common areas, while dedicated outdoor air handling units provide conditioned ventilation air to each suite. Individual vertical heat pumps with electric heating coils serve the residential units. Electric heating was selected by the Owner to simplify maintenance and enhance system redundancy, supported by a full-building emergency generator.

Safety and reliability were key priorities for the campus facilities team. BHB incorporated multiple redundancy measures, including a 277V single-phase electrical service to reduce maximum accessible voltage for students, full emergency generator backup for building power, and a staggered heating startup sequence within the building automation system to minimize generator sizing requirements.

Throughout design, BHB worked closely with the University Facilities team to ensure alignment with campus standards and long-term operational goals. Maverick Hall broke ground in February 2024 and represents a modern, resilient residential facility designed to support UT Arlington’s growing student population.
