BHB provided civil, mechanical and electrical engineering design for the 155,000 SF, $63 million renovation and addition of the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, now known as the Ed & Rae Schollmaier Arena. The project included a complete replacement of all MEP and architectural components. Reconfiguration to the seating area now allows for capacity of 8,000 people.

Construction consisted of adding new locker rooms, training and hydrotherapy areas. A new courtside club complete with food service and bar area serves up to 400 people. Expansion of the existing concourse and circulation areas added new concession areas, restrooms and a hall of honor which features the history of TCU athletics. The project also added a two-story office wing for athletics and administration. 

One major project challenge was renovation of the coliseum while several surrounding buildings remained operational. The team routed new piping and located new equipment so that new systems could be completed while the existing systems remained online. The phasing of this work greatly impacted major aspects of the new design.

    By the time he was in high school, Austin Baird knew he wanted to be an engineer. After graduating high school, Austin began working at BHB in the field on a survey crew. While attending college at the University of Texas, Austin discovered his passion for civil engineering and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2001.

    Austin is now a Principal with experience in design and project management. His experience includes municipal infrastructure, water resources, environmental engineering, drainage systems, transportation, and land development. He has been responsible for the engineering design of water, sewer, paving, and drainage systems, as well as close coordination with local municipalities, counties, TxDOT, TCEQ, and other governing agencies for construction permits, zoning changes, and site planning efforts.

    Austin is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, once President of the Fort Worth chapter, and has also served as President of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers Fort Worth Chapter. He is a LEED Accredited Professional and a Certified Professional in Erosion & Sediment Control.

    Outside of work, Austin likes to spend time with his wife, Elizabeth, and their two kids, Jackson and Leah. He also enjoys cooking and traveling anywhere with a beach. Austin’s hidden talents include being a self-taught juggler and balloon artist.

    Joe LaCroix, PE

    An explorer at heart, Joe once had dreams of following in the footsteps of Lewis & Clark. He loves to travel to any new place, exploring and discovering the many experiences that the world has to offer. His calling here at home, though, is the creative design process of civil engineering. He was drawn to this line of work for the opportunity to work with clients and take their vision for a project to design on paper, through construction, and into the built world. As a principal at BHB, he enjoys the ability to work on a wide variety of projects while also being involved in the Texas Society of Professional Engineers and the MATHCOUNTS program. Joe is also a graduate of the Professional Engineer Leadership Institute.

    Outside of work, he enjoys traveling with his wife Meridith, and is a scoutmaster for a local Boy Scout Troop.

    Allen Grammer, PE, NSSA AP

    Growing up with a construction engineer father, Allen was always fascinated by the giant machines; as he grew up, the technical and problem-solving aspects of the industry drew him to his career as a mechanical engineer. He’ll tell you that it is just as much fun as he imagined it would be. Allen found BHB during his senior year at TCU, when a classmate and then-intern at the company encouraged him to apply. His work experience also includes a summer internship with the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Washington, DC, and he is currently active in the leadership team of the Fort Worth Chapter of ASHRAE.

    Not a lot of people know that Allen plays the violin – a little bit of everything, from Mozart to Charlie Daniels. He also enjoys all things tech (such as playing games on the computer), traveling to Disney world, and spending time with his wife Kacy and their small cat family.
